Names. We all have them. A list of letter and sounds which when spoken gives a sense of identity and expectations. All of us have preconceived notions of how a person will be like when we hear their name.
Examples
Crystals are perky, pretty and poplar
Dantes are dark, mysterious and brooding.
Are these descriptions accurate? No, they are not. I don’t know any Crystals or Dantes. But the name makes me think of those qualities.
The same is true about your toon’s name. You, like an almighty creator, stare at the character creation screen wondering if you really should give your gnome chick pink princess Lela buns (the answer is no) and think, what should I name her?
Many will be tempted to press the random name generator button. Stop the impulse. Your toon’s name is a reflection of your own personality. It called an avatar for a reason. Whether you intend it or not, your toon’s name will conjure connotations, people who haven’t grouped with you, will assume one thing or another based solely on your name.
Let’s looks a couple of examples (/flame disclaimer-these names are totally fabricated. There is no association with anyone using these names/end flame disclaimer):
Healyah-Holy Priest/Pally or Resto Shammy/Druid
Ipwnyou- PvP lover, probably teh suck (as Shiatra would say). I see names like this all the time on Bleeding. Pff...please.
Remember when you choose a name and it is accepted in the server, you can’t change it. For hunters, this is even more difficult because you must also name your pet, at least I hope you do. It is sad to see a 70 STV tiger named “Cat”. Your pet name, just like yours, reflects on you.
Okay, what is a new hunter/toon suppose to do when they are staring at the screen, their creation ready to be born and the name box is blank?
Here are a few humble guidelines:
Pick a name that doesn’t reflect one specific talent tree of your class
DPS classes all may have the word pwn, melt or dotz without changing any expectations, after all, they are there to kill. However, this is not so for classes which different talent specs create totally different toons, such as Druids, Priests, Shammys and Pallys. While names like Healyah and Healnone are great, because they give a definite idea of what spec you are, they will also open you for constant tells, such as “ur name is Healyah. How come u r shadow?” and vise versa. Don’t pigeon hold yourself unless you are absolutely sure you are never going to change specs.
Mxynmpela…How do you pronounce that?
Ah, the joys of the random generator! Make sure you can pronounce your name. Please avoid names that have more than three consonants together. Your brain will melt trying to figure out how to say it. I know mine has.
Gender specific
I know someone who wanted to name his pally after a roman general and found one he liked. He named his blond, male human Peona. Enough said.
Attitude
Does your toon have a specific attitude? Do you want them to have one? If you could pick one word to describe your Hunter what would it be? Strong, Independent? Guide? Fearless? Each of these words can be associated with names. While no one is looking, head over to baby world and type these words under “meaning”.
The meaning ‘strong’ returned the following names:
Boys: Garrison, Ryker, Tanveer,
Girls: Breana, Valery, Tisha
See how that works? When I named Pookie, I wanted an ironic name. A name that brought up the feelings of comfort and security, and so I decided to use my nickname. It is hilarious watching a horde turned into a rotting carcass by a beast with Pookie flashing above its head. Irony. Got to love it.
Personal
Have a favorite character from a book, movie or anime? Have a version of your name that your like? Loved your great-uncle Bert’s middle name? Give those a try. Remember common names are most likely taken but also remember to play around with the spelling. The point is to make it sound like the name your want. Not necessarily make it look like it.
Example: Diana might be taken but Dianna or Dyanna might not be.
Theme
This rule targets mainly hunter and their pets.
When you are naming your pet think about how it is going to sound with your name? Do you want to create a theme?
I know a hunter whose name is Dirtytaco (it is about the 5 sec rule, I swear) and his pets’ names are NastyBurrito and UlgyChulupa. That is what we call theme. If you don’t have a theme using your own name, think about creating one using theirs. Right now, I don’t have a theme going, but when I was leveling, I had a bat named Westley and a turtle named Humperdinck.
Again remember, after you name them you can’t undo it. Don’t, in a drunken moment, name your pet bear Babygotbak, especially if you are a NE or Dwarf chick.
Like your name
Be sure you REALLY like your name. Unlike when your parents’ named you after Aunt Estelle, you now have the opportunity to pick a name that you want people to call you by. Be as creative as you want. I really like nicknames (since you can’t make one out of my real name) and I love the fact that everyone calls me either Bre or Bel. They fit.
Make sure what ever name you pick fits you as well.
/Bre and Pookie out.

All my cats save for 1 were named after Legacy of Kain characters. The oddball was named "Rumtumtugger"
lately I've drifted into humorus and double layered refernces
like a Rip-Blade ravager named "Deeteater" poking fun at Harry Potter universe.
my alt's rip-blade I'm tossing around naming "Joseph" or "Osmund"
my rfk boar named "Paranoid" in refernece to the Black Sabbath album with 'War Pigs' on it
my alts piggie is named BoarBQ since it some how survived getting torched by my mage friend.
I so want to name a pet boar "Cat" but just can't bring myself to.
Currently my tiger is named Schrödinger
Kate Monk's Onomastikon is another great source of names. I spend a lot of time dinking around there before naming a new toon. (I can't tell you how many times I've had a friend waiting in the starting area for me, as I'm trying to come up with the Perfect name...)
My Hunters name is Brotik, don't know why just like the "otik" theme.
My RFK Boar is named Abrahms, slightly misspelled but in reference to one of the craziest tanks I have seen in action and he is my tank.
Still trying to decide what other pets I'll get later on and will probably decide on thier names then.
Alas, I have to disagree about not touching the random name generator. It's actually on par with scanning baby name sites sometimes. Without the built in name meaning. =)
I've played with it often when the names I wanted just weren't available. And there's times when I'd find a pregen name I liked, but it was taken. So I'd play around with spellings of it, or adding 'ana' or 'anna' prefixes to it (Kayalana, my druid, got her name this way, from the pregen name Kaya).
So seriously. Don't diss the pregen tool. It can yeild some great names if you're patient with it. :)
I'll spare more lengthy rants on names. You have to bear in mind I come from RP servers who have more stringent naming conventions. When I get on plain pve servers, I cringe and want to run and hide. =)
@Suzanne
LOL...point taken.
You my dear, have had better luck than I with the pregen names. I stand corrected that is can't produce good name, but often I will not wait around clicking on it until I find one I like.
Perhaps I should put a note stating this post is from the prospective of a person who has played almost exclusivity on a pvp server. Oh the horrors, Suzanne...I can't even talk about it...it is really that bad.
Looking back, I have sometimes regretted my name choice. But this was just because I just did not know upon character what I knew a year later...
So my name refers to one of my hobbies, which used to be mountainbiking. Xizang was an ingenious titanium mountainbike frame I never had the gold to possess. It is a classic, an iconic thing...
But I knew the manufacturer had not made this name up by himself, no. It is the chinese name of for the Thibet Autonomous Region (TAR). So my toon is a hunter, wearing a chinese name ... get the point?
I don't know how many times I have been flamed by unknown people who suffered from the misconception of my toon being a chinese farmer. Ironically enough, I have been hanging around the same places the "real" farmers or bots were as well. Like Silithus, farming twilight texts for Cenarion reputation.
The funny thing was, that the farmers left the area when I showed up, because with my gear not being AH-greens, I just outgeared and outplayed them.
My pet on the other hand tells a different story. When I first learned about ferocious growl I went to LBRS and tamed myself a wolf. I named him "Yowler", and during our raids to MC and onwards I sort of broke the rule of hunterpets being put away because even when not attacking, my wolf would provide a buff for myself and nearby hunters.
But once there were too many black wolves around, I decided to go for somethingg special, and tamed myself a Frostwolf from Alterac Valley (BG) and subsequently named him "WhiteYowler".
Some time later, my raid was in BWL engaging Vael. For the ones who have not been there, once the boss is engaged, the whole room is put under a damaging aura, producing regular fire damage.
The pet being on autocast reacted to the entry into combat with his ferocious growl, as intended, as he has done so many times before.
Just this time the tank did not grab aggro when engaging the mov. Vael turned towards the pet, which means towards the raid and just onehitted us.
From this point onwards, my pet was always referred to as "Wipeyowler" by my fellow raidmembers.
My answer was going back to AV, releasing my wolf, taming another Frostwolf, and name him "Wipeyowler" in turn. Wipeyowler has been my trademark ever since. I am pretty sure there are more people on the server knowing my pet than knowing me.
It was just after BC that I had to stable Wipeyowler because his overall capabilities were outperformanced by cats, so I had to get myself one. I named the cat Akhilleus, beacause after respeccing SV, my pet was my weakest point...
@Weezoh
I bow to you mate, great cat name :-)
My hordie hunter picked up a piggie today, and I named it "Porkmissle"
I like it when people choose names that actually sound like names rather than run on sentences eg.Kickyouintheface...is a bad choice, but the best hunter-pet name I have seen is Cause-Effect. I thought it just kinda meshed. Anyhoo keep up the great posts coming.
I'd add one thing to your guide... please people, for the love of all that's holy (or not if yer Undead), PLEASE use a name that can be spelled by someone that wants to MAIL you something!
Jeesh, the latest fad sweeping my server are idjits that use special ASCII characters to simulate letters. How the hell do you ever expect anyone in your guild to mail you something if you're not online?
Oh... and my hunter is yet another 'Wind'something... cause all of my character names start with 'Wind' for ease of what my friends call me no matter what toon I'm on. But I tamed a Ghost Sabre for my pet at 19/20, and have kept it as my only pet ever since. Level 69 Ghost Saber named Moonclaw. :)
To Bearbutt:
You know those names with the special ascii characters? They're bad names on any server, because they cannot be typed by normal means. Feel free to report them any damn time you see them and do it with glee! ;)
Bre:
I've actually played on a couple pve servers (Eonar and now Arygos). The names... they make me want to cry and flee, but alas, I cannot. And I can't even report them! *hides* And mind you, bad ones DO show up on the rp realms. And sometimes those bad names even make it to 70 and stick around and annoy us because the player is actually a nice person. So you don't have the heart to report their god awful name. >.> There's a reason I avoid Goldshire, because the worst offenders are always there. Ipwnzyou and their ilk are always found there, duelspamming the days away. And that's on Feathermoon. =)
@Xi
That is one awesome cat name. Greek Mythology FTW.
@BigBear
LOL YES! I had thought about the special characters, but I forgot to add it to when I wrote the post. A very good friend, who loved to PVP, intentionally created names with special characters so the horde would have a hard time creating tracking macros (like you said, it make it almost impossible to send him stuff. We would constantly harass him about it). He did this on both his characters and ganked so much that both of his toons got reported after separate but equally bloody campfests.
Well, I started in this game knowing very little about it. I was just looking for an escapist fantasy, an alternative to RL. I wanted an avatar to represent the RL me in the WOW universe, so the short, stocky dwarf was obvious. Since this was to be "me" a misspelling of my own name would also do. (I played Quake 3 for years as DanagerousByDesign but that was too many letters... oh, and to this day I still respond to "DBD")
For my pets, I'm with Bre on the ironic names. My almost constant companion is a winterwolf named "Skippy" and I have a new arena Blacksabre kitty named "Sweetpea". I have to tell you, the first time I used him in an arena, Our team literally sqealed with delight as Bre's Pookie and my Sweetpea devastated the opponent's healer. One second, there was a horde priest, the next, just a red mist. I hope he read his combat log to see he was mangeled by a "Pookie" n' "Sweetpea"
Me: Urthona, Night Elf druid; Aertho, Draenei paladin; Erthas, Human warrior; Irthalomew, Gnome mage
My friends
Torimagic, Human mage; Toriheal, Dwarf priest; Toritotem, Draenei shaman; Toritank, Night Elf warrior
Lilyan, Dwarf priest; Lilenya, Draenei shaman; Lilyandra, Gnome warlock
Barrister, Human paladin; Baryd, Night Elf Druid; Barnebby, Gnome mage; Barooch, Draenei hunter
Makes Vent very easy since we are all "Urth", "Tori", "Lily", and "Barr".
In regards to pet names, I always try to fit the name not only to the pet itself, but to a theme that is meaningful to me.
For example, my current pet is a tiger named Tsavo, after the Tsavo lions (I know, different species, but work with me here). Previously, I spent about 20 levels with a raptor named Sastrii (after carnotaurus sastrii, a little-known dinosaur that I've always liked).
Of course, my first real long-duration pet was a spider named Iktiktiktiktik, which I just thought was funny.
I'm so terrible with names *sigh* - it takes me forever to come up with anything resembling good ones.
Jabari (male troll warrior) was from a baby-name site - means "strong", and sounded troll-ish so I went with it. Not too bad, only took about an hour or so to find. *chuckle*
I do like my shaman's name though - Dustweaver (female tauren). Named after the opening CGI sequence where the tauren sprinkles the dust around before going Ghost Wolf.
Favorite hunter pet name for me: Quetzalcoatl (windserpent, obviously) :)
