One night, after a very frustrating two hours looking for a healer for Kara , Shia and I decided to solve the issue by doing one thing.Creating new toons.
In our defense, we were drunk and bored, so it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Persephen (three guesses where the name comes from ) rolled out of the Exodar crash site and onto my toon sheet. Overall, it isn't so bad. She has great racials, and I absolutely love her draenei priest racials, Symbol of Hope and Fear Ward.
There was just one little thing I didn't even consider when I made her.
Her mount.

Except when they are purple and blue and are made out of pixels.
I mean, COME ON! They don't even have KNEES! They just seem to wobble from one side of the road to the other, with the toon precariously lumped on top of them like an afterthought. There is no grace, no visual thrill riding it. Instead, you keep adjusting your camera angles looking for the trail of manure.
Okay, okay. Not every mount is pretty, but at least the ones that aren't look fearsome! Like the Dino mount or the Skeleton mount,they look hideous, but I would kill to have one. Why? Because they have attitude!
Dumbo doesn't.
He looks like that inflated greasy guy you knew in high school who face gleamed with sweat and acne.
They look abused and nervous. With busted knees.
No amount of purple armor plating will change that.

Alright, you say, I guess you don’t like the elephant mount. Then what are you going to do? Wait until you are 60 and get a pvp mount?
No, gentle reader. I am getting a Kitty.
Behold the crazed plan concocted late one night a couple of weeks ago.

Me: I hate these damn elephants
Lola: I am going to get a purple one just for you
Insert riotous laughter at my expense.
Me: I am going become Exalted with Darnassus before I hit 40 and getting a Kitty
Insert scoffs
Maybe I am nuts. But then again, Maybe not. Look at the following pics:

Many of the Azuremyst and Bloodmyst quests give honor for Darn and by the time I landed in Darkshore, I was already honored. I have limited myself to only quests which will give me Darn rep and with the help of Lightheaded and Tomtom, I know which quests give rep and which don't so I don't waste my time.
If anyone knows of any way of getting more Darn rep outside of quests and before you are 40, please feel free to share. I will send you a beer and my anti-elephant mount icon.
Rep update: Tonight, I hit 24 and am currently 10644 out of 12000.

that there is a link to Allakhazam and a reputation sheet on what quests give rep and what level the quests are.
pretty much do ALL the starter quests and every other quest you can get from that list. Looks like you have to do some cloth turn ins also.
Have Fun!
Fear not!
I have done this with no less than three drae characters (I AM NOT ADDICTED TO REROLLING, NO MA'AM)
It's supremely possible. Once you get off the drae isle, go to the baby brand new newbie nelf lands and work your way up. By the time you get done with Forest Song, you should be perilously close AND almost to 40.
I've gotten my kitty mount on all of my drae before 40 for the exact same reason you mention here - those elephants are just awful. And the armor doesn't help.
(Incidentally, I was also able to get my ram mount before 50. Rams > All)
Go back and do all the starting quests in Teldrassil. No XP, but you can get the Rep.
Here's a list of quests that provide Darnassus Rep. http://www.wowhead.com/?faction=69#quests
I rolled a dwarve hunter and really want a kitty for my mount. I went to Teldrassil at 10 did all the starting quests for the rep and went on to Darkshore. I'm 21 now and revered.
I don't exactly share your loathing of the elephant mount, but I certainly believe it is quite "un-cool" (lol... a WOW addict worried about being cool)
I wanted a cat too. The cat's ARE cool. What did I get? Well, being the Dwarf that I am, I was stuck with a goat. Ok, ok...I know it's a Ram... but it tasted like goat. As soon as I earned enough tokens to get my Black Battle Kitty, my Dwarven mount took a double-tap to the back of the skull and tossed into a cauldron (you can't roast big goats, it's an all-day thing. Gotta stew them. I'm telling you, if you love your Ram, take good care of him, pamper him, let him play with the children, give him a good life... the meat just falls off the bone.
Always hungry,
Krystofar
It's funny, I wasn't thrilled with the elephant mounts. I didn't really want one, but I got one at 40 because... I really REALLY REALLY REALLY didn't feel like doing all the Telldrassil quests again. And I really really really HATE HATEY HATE Ashnevale. Hate it. Loath it. I want to burn it down.
So I had a purple elephant for my dreanei hunter from 40-59. I got used to it by the time I hit 45 and didn't hate it so much. Then I bought my swift palamino pony at 60. =) Right now, I'm coveting a brewfest ram for her. >.> *huggles her priest's Stormpike Go... er Ram*
I hate most of the Nelf areas. Like, the higher-level stuff is okay, in Azshara and Felwood and Winterspring. But Teldrassil-Darkshore-Ashenvale-Stonetalon? Absolute pain. Tried it both on the Hunter and the Druid, and I just couldn't take it (Forest Song, the new place, isn't bad, but it lacks depth, outside one major quest chain). So yeah...good thing I already have two Nelfs with kitty mounts. =)
@Ego, Grumpy and BryGy
Thanks for the rep pages!
Teldrassil! Lord I am losing my *beeping* mind. I could have sworn I did those quests on Per, when I started to think back on it, I did those quests on BRE! Bre is also going through “oh how cute the kitty mount is” phase as well. Blah, need to make a spreadsheet to keep my head straight.
@Ego-Ram are my favorite mounts. They do, indeed, win all. :)
@Krys
You know you love your ram. And I will call PETA if there is an rumors of you cooking your mount /glare. I know where you play.
@Suzanne
I hope I don’t have to find out. But I share you hatred and absolute aversion to the NE lands, hence why I have not rolled one. Let me know when you want to create a bonfire. I am there.
Good luck with the ram! I will be living in the Brewfest because I too would love to get one of those mounts. Have you seen the horns on those suckers! They are HUGE!
Less than 24 hours into Brewfest and I'm 128 tickets towards that 600 ticket goal.
13 days of brewfest. If the pace keeps up, I shouldn't have to camp brewfest for invading DI dwarfs.
I -will- have a Dreanei on a ram!
Just need to make sure my white war talbuk doesn't get jealous. =)
Is the name a Firefly ref?
As for the ellek.....
I hate the things as well. my other hunter Hadessa went with out a mount until 45 (started the repgrind at 35). Went for a cat as well. The pristine Yeti hides in Feralas make it buku easier.
currently on the Wintersaber grind with her, taming Rak'shiri at 58... challenging to not get mauled by the dense mob population
@Suzanne:
Congrats! May the tickets flow into your bags! We want a pic of you and your new mount when you get it!
@Maevet:
Nope, not Firefly, but I love that show...possible character names :)
It is Greek. As in Mythology.
Thanks for the Yeti tip, I will look into it and good luck with the taming! Those sleath mobs are a pain.
The allakhazam link is priceless. I have my kitty mount lined up and I'm still 33. I just hit Exalted today.
The best way really is doing all the NE areas. Also, do dungeons when you can. The +Alliance rep is indispensable. Do the 'Missing Diplomat' quest chain, along with other tedious ones like that that lead to +Alliance rep or large (500) rep boosts with any of the Alliance factions. The flow-over is worth it. After I did all the newbie zones, I went to Duskwood and did most of the quests there. I did not do Sven or Stalven or Mor'Ladim. I didn't do the hair comb quest from Eva. So you can skip some, but if you have a group or partner, do them anyway. Any rep boost is good.
At 33 I did the first two quests in the Nijel's Point quest line starting at the NElf guy at the very front of the town. That gave me 400 combined rep and got me over the top.
Good luck with getting your cat!
